BRIDGE TEAM MANAGEMENT (BTM)
The aim
of this course is to ensure that mariners are trained and prepared to
respond safely and efficiently for controlling the bridge operations
from departure to destination and to reach this end consistently
demands a level of skill which is not easy to quantify but which needs
to become part of the maritime culture. Studies have shown that
majority of accidents at sea are due to human error and a weak and
poor organization of the team.
When
bridge operations are loosely organized the impression can be given
that things will be alright, but when the unexpected occurs, confusion
arises, more error happen, it becomes difficult to make decisions
which could lead into an account. Hence the need for an efficient
bridge team and a good bridge team management.
For
bridge team to be successful there must be a good teamwork, good
co-ordination, communication and capabilities of handling emergencies.
Those successfully completing this course will be able to make
efficient and effective use of bridge team and bridge resources and
will have ability to plan, organize and manage a bridge team and
ability to respond to, co-ordinate and execute a search and rescue
operation and all bridge operations involving team work.

OPERATIONAL USE OF ECDIS, IMO MODEL COURSE 1.27
This
course provides training in the basic theory and use of Electronic
Chart Display and Information system (ECDIS), the theoretical aspects
like all major characteristics of ECDIS data such as data contents and
all major characteristics of the display of ECDIS data will be covered
in sufficient depth.
For
capabilities and skills, exercises are performed which will provide
practice in setting up and maintaining an ECDIS display, in planning
and monitoring a route, in using basic navigational functions and
equipment in a real time navigational environment, in activating
updates and in performing proper actions which are necessary for a
safe navigational watch.
This
course is specially aimed for navigating officers of operation and
management level.
On
successful completion of this course the trainee will be able to use
ECDIS for his navigational watch. He will be able to operate ECDIS
equipment, use the navigational functions of ECDIS, select and assess
all relevant information and take proper action.
Trainees
will acquire and develop a knowledge and understanding of the basic
principles governing the safe operation of ECDIS, including ECDIS data
and their presentation, as well as system related limitations and
potential dangers.
Trainees
will be able to generate and maintain displays, to operate all basic
navigational functions and all specific functions for route planning
as well as route monitoring, to use and select proper navigational
data and to display the data in the appropriate manner. He will also
be able to perform updating.
Trainees
will be able to analyse nautical alarms during route planning and
route monitoring as well as sensor alarms. He will be able to assess
the impact of the performance limits of sensors on the safe use of
ECDIS and to appreciate that the back-up system is only of limited
performance. He will be able to assess errors, inaccuracies and
ambiguities caused by improper data management. Thus he will be aware
of errors in displayed data, errors of interpretation and the risk of
over-reliance on ECDIS and be able to take proper action.
In
addition he will have knowledge of the principal types of electronic
chart and essential legal aspect of the use of ECDIS.

RADAR NAVIGATION AT MANAGEMENT LEVEL, IMO MODEL COURSE 1.08
This
course is essentially practical and consists of a series of exercises
performed on a radar simulator with two or more own ships and a number
of others controlled by the instructor. Each exercise will involve
observing the movement of ships seen on the radar, recognizing those
presenting a threat of collision and taking actions to avoid
collision. Trainees will act either as master or as an observing
officer for the exercises, and will change roles to allow each a turn
in command of an own ship.
As the
course progresses, exercises of increasing complexity are set to
provide realistic practice in the use of radar for navigation and
collision avoidance in confined waters with heavy traffic. Each
exercises will be followed by class discussion, giving participants
the opportunity to analyse the actions taken and discuss possible
alternatives. This IMO model course meets the mandatory minimum
requirements for knowledge, understanding and proficiency in Table
A-II/2 of the STCW 95
Those
successfully completing the course will be able to make efficient and
effective use of radar as a navigational aid in congested, confined
waters, recognize potential threats and make valid navigational and
collision-avoidance decisions based on sound radar observation and
plotting in compliance with the International Regulations for
Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG). They will be aware of the time
need to appreciate that dangerous situation is developing, to decide
upon and take appropriate action, and to ascertain that such action is
adequate and does not give rise to further conflicts with other
vessels. They will also realize that excessive speed in poor
visibility reduces the time available to assess a threat and to take
appropriate action. Ability to plan, organize and manage a bridge
team, making use of all navigational data, will also be achieved.
Successful completion of this course will also provide ability to
respond to, co-ordinate and execute a search and rescue operation.

aspects covered include the theory necessary to understand how radar
information is obtained and displayed, the limitations and accuracy of
that information, the formation and recognition of unwanted responses,
the correct use of operational controls to obtain an optimal display
and checks on performance of the set and modes of display.
This
course also covers the recognition of critical targets, the
measurement of bearings and distances, and the use of these for
position fixing and maintaining a plot of the movement of other ships
as an aid to collision avoidance.
In
addition all functions of ARPA, various displays, performance
standards of ARPA, errors of ARPA, effect of input errors to CPA, TCPA,
target’s course and speed and trial manoeuvre and the dangers of over
reliance on ARPA.
On
successful completion of this course the trainee should be able to use
radar and ARPA effectively for position fixing, collision avoidance
and all other purposes as per the requirement of STCW convention and
